The Featured Snippet Optimization Checklist: What to Verify Before You Publish

The Featured Snippet Optimization Checklist: What to Verify Before You Publish

Run through this before you consider featured snippet optimization actually done:

1. Answer the query directly in 40-60 words immediately after the heading that matches the question — this is the length Google most often pulls verbatim.
2. Use the exact question phrasing as an H2/H3 when it matches real search queries — it gives Google an unambiguous chunk to extract.
3. For list or table-based queries ('best X', 'X vs Y'), format the answer as an actual list or table in your HTML, not just prose describing one.
4. Check who currently holds the snippet for your target query and identify what's missing from their answer that yours can cover better.
5. Double-check this after any site migration or major redesign, not just at launch.

None of these individually take long. The value is in doing all of them, every time, instead of remembering most of them most of the time.

Pair this with the blog content ideas checklist if you're doing a fuller pre-launch pass.

Featured Snippet Optimizer runs through most of this automatically.
